L&PA Committee
Subject: Economic Opportunity Institute contribution
Background
This motion asks the NW Council
to approve contributing $3,750, to include a $2,500 contribution and $1,250 toward
a table at the annual fundraiser for members, guests and staff, for the
Economic Opportunity Institute (EOI).
The Economic Opportunity
Institute is a non-profit public policy organization in Seattle. Many of its
contributors are unions, such as IAM District 751, SEIU, UFCW local 21,
teachers unions and the Washington State Labor Council.
EOI collects data, produces
studies, advocates in Olympia, testifies at hearings, and helps define issues
that affect working families, such as K-12 education, early childhood learning,
paid sick leave, protecting Social Security and other retirement systems,
minimum wage, health care and tax reform.
EOI formed a project with SPEEA
and the IAM to attract new large aerospace employers to Washington State. This
effort prompted the Governor’s Aerospace Council to include that goal in their
priorities, which led to the IAM and SPEEA participating with the Washington
State delegation at the Paris Air Show in 2011. EOI helped develop messaging
for that trip and set the context for the Accenture study that led to Boeing committing
to build the 737 MAX in Renton.

activities can be found at: http://www.eoionline.org/
